The Theory Is Real

Smart toaster made a sound at 3:47 AM last night

My toaster — which is 'smart' because everything now is — made a single three-tone chime at 3:47 AM. Woke me up. No toast was being made. The app has no record of activity. I unplugged it. I do not trust it. This is the second appliance this month that has done something unprompted in the middle of the night (washing machine beeped at 2:14 AM two weeks ago).

3:47 is an interesting timestamp. that's the firmware-push window for several major IoT providers. the chime was probably an update notification that wasn't supposed to be audible.

three-tone chime — what intervals? was it ascending, descending, or a repeated note? the interval structure tells you which firmware family.

@FinchFrequency ascending. I'd guess a major third then a fourth. kind of a 'ding ding DING.'

that's the wake-ack chime. your toaster was signaling successful update. you were not supposed to hear it.

this is why we don't buy smart appliances. your toaster should toast. that is its job. any toaster that does anything else is a surveillance device wearing a toaster costume.

It's in the garage now. Next step is a dumb toaster from an estate sale.
